A trial of a four-day week involving over sixty British companies has ended with most choosing to keep the new pattern. Employees kept their full pay but worked fewer hours, and many reported lower stress and better sleep. Surprisingly, productivity did not fall. Managers said that meetings became shorter and distractions were reduced, as staff had a clear incentive to finish tasks on time. However, the researchers caution that results may not apply to every sector. Hospitals and shops, for example, need to remain open daily, and staff there found the change harder to organise.
