Drones circling above a field of wheat may seem like science fiction, but in parts of Eastern England they are now routine. Fitted with cameras, they identify patches of crop suffering from disease or lack of water, allowing farmers to treat only the affected areas. Grower Rob Ellis says the technology has cut his use of chemicals by a fifth. 'It's no longer about spraying the whole field,' he says. Critics point out that the equipment is costly and may favour large farms over small ones. Ellis agrees but hopes prices will fall as the technology becomes more widespread.
