Across Britain, hundreds of kilometres of disused railway line have been turned into walking and cycling paths. The best known, in Derbyshire, passes through tunnels and over viaducts that are themselves popular attractions. Local businesses report that cafes and bike hire shops have flourished along the route. Not all neighbours are pleased, however: some complain of litter and of cyclists travelling too fast. Planner Louise Carter says such problems can usually be solved with signs and a code of conduct. She believes that the paths prove how a forgotten piece of infrastructure can gain a second life with relatively little investment.
